Technology is wonderful!
Technology is wonderful – or is it?
Is technology wonderful?
Long suffering readers will PROBABLY have a good idea which is my opinion.
A little aside – first of the day.
In Spanish, “technology is wonderful” and “is technology wonderful?” are exactly the same words – and in the same order.
The only difference is the question mark (and the upside down one at the beginning of the question if you’re being good) which means you do have to listen carefully.
Statement or question – the difference is in the inflection.
Not a lot of people know that.

Tea and a lie down later.
I was expecting a not all that busy week this week but it certainly hasn’t panned out that way.
And unlike the previous rant it’s been software all the way.
An – on the face of it – straightforward spreadsheet that took from Monday to Wednesday to get it to equal the number I first thought of.
That REALLY buggers your planned timetable for the week, especially with me not working Fridays.
But it was:
- important,
- urgent, and
- (even more importantly) I couldn’t delegate/outsource it to anyone else!
so down to me it was.
And, as it ever is, if I’d got it wrong or fudged it (technical term there) no one would likely ever know.
Certainly not before I’d be long gone I imagine, but
you don’t get it wrong. Your pride for starters won’t let you.
So head down, nose to the grindstone and grin and bear it.
Technology is wonderful – not?
I do wish they wouldn’t keep talking about aerosols on the radio.
Old old joke – just sounds a little like something VERY rude.
Nothing like a poke in the aerosol with a sharp stick…
Just the thought makes your eyes water.
So, that was “issue” 1. Now for issue 2.
Same assignment unbelievably.
Difficult to explain without appearing pedantic and/or incompetent as well.
Suffice to say that had I explained the problem to the client, or indeed anyone, what was wrong I’d have been rewarded with a quizzical look as if to say “well just alter it”.
Which, given the figurework is generated by a piece of software is sometimes not as straightforward as it sounds.
After in excess of two hours running round in ever decreasing circles it’s time to admit defeat and call the tech people in.
And no quibbles there. Phone call within the hour, dialed in and screen shared and fifteen minutes later found a tiny box that needed to be ticked.
Et voila everything works and I’ll know for next time – except I won’t as the chances of coming across the same set of circumstances again in a million years is a tad unlikely…
Technology is wonderful – until it isn’t.
Ah well.
Going back to the Spanish again, I’m ending up with a very sore index finger.
I can hear the silence from here.
How do you get a sore finger learning a language?
Polite comments only please.
Well, I thought I’d already mentioned Duolingo but the search function within WordPress can’t find it so probably not.
Something I’m very proud of during lockdown is that we’ve used the time to learn another language.
And with Die Tochter now living in Gibraltar and staying in Spain (quarantining permitting) is MUCH cheaper than staying in Gib.
So if you’re staying in Spain it would only be polite to try to learn the !*!* language.
And nearly 150 days tapping away on the phone screen is making the finger tip a bit tender.
Maybe it’s just the app I’ve not mentioned? Who knows.
Well, 18.00 approaches and I’ve not looked at an email since 08.00 so I might just be putting aside a touch of my Friday off to see what I’ve missed.
Ain’t life grand?
Is technology/ technology is wonderful…
Answers on a postcard please.
