To be a better boss
I’ve decided to try and be a better boss – to me.
And anyone else obviously…
But me is the important one – because I tend to give me such a hard time.
Which may be justified sometimes but can be seriously counterproductive at other times.
A for instance
It’s a little quiet, client-wise, at this time of the year – holidays and the like – so any sensible person would say whoopee and spend the day faffing.
Which I am doing.
Not now obviously because I’m writing this but much of this morning.
Now even a month ago I couldn’t have done that.
Too long in corporate life had left me with a very bad case of presenteeism (unsurprisingly not in the spellchecker).
When your fellow partners measure ability by hours worked (well one of them anyway) and he is the managing partner and you work best by going for a walk/having a shower/sleeping on it you are well and truly fucked.
So long meaningless hours to make it look like you’re one of the big swinging dicks.
Hated it. So glad to move on.
Trouble is
carried it over into my own business. Seventeen years to get the monkey off my back.
Doesn’t bear thinking about. Sigh.
Actually I’ve been in a strange no man’s land for the last few years.
Time off to get a haircut? Check.
Ditto doctors and osteopath appointments, etc.
But sat at the desk at 07.45 (getting later now, generally after 08.30 now) and knock off in time for dinner at 19.00 with just an hour for lunch? All too often.
Then an hour or two before bed.
But now…
Me and I have a new understanding! As long as I get all the “stuff” done, I get to do whatever hours I want and in any way I want.
Long time coming.
Better boss here I come!
Sorry I missed last week. Die Tochter and I went to Amsterdam and Brussels for a long weekend and I just seemed to run out of time before running out of things to do.
The time taken enjoying ourselves was far in excess of the sort of hours you’d put in doing anything else – out at 09.00-ish and back around midnight.
15 hour days for three and a half days after half a day’s work on Thursday.
And I wonder why I’m knackered…
It’s been a tiring old week this week. I do wonder why?!
Actually today has been the sort of day that would previously have worried me:
- haircut
- take daughter to railway station
- osteopath
- check out swollen eyelid at pharmacy and get told to get the doctor to look at it
- go to surgery and be told it will be dealt with over the phone (bizarre but true)
- talk to triage doctor and be told I should go to a minor injuries unit as they have a piece of kit the surgery doesn’t
I’m currently researching minor injuries units to try and work out which is the least inconvenient to get to.
Story of my life!
If it kills me I’m going to be upset you know…
This is being a most convoluted post to write.
To the first gap was written before playing taxi, the middle bit after returning from the surgery and this bit at 20.30 in the evening.
And I must stop touching the swollen piece of my eye.
It’s human nature I know but why oh why the minute something hurts/aches/is sore do you start poking it on a regular basis?
Finally for today (and before I run out of today) I’ve started writing my next 4Networking Foresight/serious blog article/book.
Wrote the whole of version 1 of the outline/synopsis on Tuesday.
Now need to make sure I write a little more each day…
Back to being my better boss – I might give me the rest of the day off.
