Software – can’t live with it, can’t live without it (2)
Title but that’s no reason not to use it again. Am “assisting” with transferring from this laptop to another, newer one. After all this time you’d THINK you’d be able to plug one into the other and everything of interest will move across. But no. Download all the software again. Find where all the p@55w0rds are hidden. It’s taken four hours here (and how ever long at their premises prior to that) and we’re welcoming them back again tomorrow to finish the install off. I can understand the bootlegging considerations. I can understand the security implications. But let’s be honest, it shouldn’t be beyond the wit of the hardware and software companies to get something sorted out. Should it? If it was a question of paying extra or some such with the possibility for DIYers to go it alone I’m sure it would be a winner. Especially as Sheelagh and Nigel don’t charge me extra for doing the transfer. So who gains? Who loses? It’s not even as if it’s easier to do Lenovo to Lenovo or HP to HP, etc., which I could at least understand – a method of encouraging upgrades to the same hardware platform you’re already on – but no, not at all. SOMEONE pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase tell me why……………………………………
It’s been a meeting-y sort of week.
Which is good. In principle. But if you’ve got a chunk of computer-y sort of “stuff” and you have to try and fit it in around the meetings it can be a little interesting… The obvious solution would be to set aside some time in the default diary but that would then mean you’d potentially end up with waiting till Thursday (e.g) or week 3 of the month which could cause outright havoc with deadlines. And many clients are NO respecters of deadlines. If I could charge a fiver to every client I’ve sent things to with the instruction/request to respond to said things giving me authority to do x/y/z with it who then does nothing/zero/nada/zilch and expresses GREAT surprise when I chase “Oh I thought you’d just do etc., etc., etc.” I’d be much better off than I am today. I REALLY need emojis here… Actually, here’s a bit of free advice – NEVER, NEVER, NEVER ask more than about three questions in an email. Because you’ll only get the first 2-3 questions answered. Grim experience.
Die Tochter is presently at home.
She did a German degree so I feel honour (add to spellchecker because the correct UK spelling isn’t in there, only the US one) bound to use the odd word or two of the language in referring to her. Not that you’d notice. It’s just after 17.30 BST local time and she’s still in bed. Yesterday and the day before were after 16.00 but this is going some. Oddly it’s NOT a record, we’ve had later. Even if that is difficult to comprehend. But we’re SUPPOSED to be having dinner at 18.00 and her mother is dining out tonight so it’s beginning to look like I’ll be dining on my own. Ho hum… I think that’ll do for this week. I’ve just been osteopath-ed so I’m undoing all of Hannah’s good work here so let’s go vegetate shall we?

Alright for some…
