The importance of good diary management

Or so I’m led to believe…

Accountant, January.

Clear the calendar of everything enjoyable and concentrate on doing the expletive deleted income tax returns.

That’s what it’s usually looking like.

So why have I had THIS week?

Monday first thing – some tax return related stuff. The rest of Monday a coaching session with a client – good outcome, client very happy, and an evening of Town Council meeting to wash it down. A few catching up bits to deal with including discovering I’ve overlooked an email that would have forewarned me I was presenting something (which came to light that afternoon when I retrieved the paperwork from the unopened post) just in case there was anything I was going to need to prep.

Which, obviously, there was but I did get there – the advantage of being able to skim read and understand documents quickly – years of practice I have to say – coming in REALLY handy…

Tuesday. A couple of coaching sessions TO me from outside. To be honest this happens every month – it’s just the juxtaposition of the whole range of appointments in such a concentrated fashion. Useful sessions as may become apparent over the next one to two years.

Wednesday. Networking 1-2-1, get stuck in traffic jam in Winchester en route next appointment due to overturned lorry on bypass (oddly that’s not how it’s flagged in Outlook but the real world does ever get in the way) and turn up at a meeting I’m supposed to be chairing 35 minutes late. Middle appointment, amusingly, I’ve phoned ahead about the delay and get to do half the meeting with me sitting in the car. Did NOT use hands free kit as I don’t have it but – at over an hour to do two miles  – I’m more than happy to argue MY corner…

Meeting I was chairing. I’d emailed earlier to try and blag some lunch as even without traffic issues I’m unlikely to have time to grab some sarnies (I’m chair of trustees at a supported housing concern for elderly people) and, because I’d not specified type of bread, filling and whatever, the kitchen staff had kindly put to one side a portion of the lunch served to the residents. Toad-in-the-hole with roast potatoes and veggies.

I was very touched.

And it was really good.

But quite difficult to eat surreptitiously while running an agenda, all things being considered… so thanks to Beverly, our General Manager, for dealing with enough of it to reduce my involvement to waving my cutlery around and mumbling through the odd mouthful of food.

Teamwork! Gotta love teamwork.

This morning a networking meeting in the next county westwards starting at 07.00 and a 50 minute drive followed by a catch-up and a coaching session about coaching with my life coach (too many coach-ing words but it is true) and it’s midday before I even step inside my office.

Only to find Windows has updated everything so I need to restart loads of programmes.

And every time I blink I have to make a conscious effort to open the damned eyelids again ‘coz I’m a tad on the tired side. Not really sure why – there are a myriad potential reasons but none of them seem to make sense.

And now I need to step out to see my osteopath. Back in a while.

Actually quite a long while. Nearly five hours in fact.

Got diverted.

Actually again did some work supporting a tax return but only after dining and watching some telly and waiting for the shoulder and neck to start moving again after the osteopathy.

Where was I?? Oh yes, where is this week going?

But I think maybe you’re getting the drift?

And I’ve got the day off tomorrow.
