Either we will get lots of intervention by government or we won’t
We’re either at the front of the queue or the end regarding treaty negotiations
We will either have a reduced borrowing cost or it will increase
Property prices will either tank or not
We will have control over immigration or we won’t
We have to invoke Article 50 or we don’t
It will take two years to come out of the EU or it will be over a decade
Politicians are frequently liars – okay, maybe there is one that everyone agrees with!
Trying to make any bl**dy decisions at the moment is entirely random.
What do we know?
- There will be winners and there will be losers.
- To a greater or lesser extent, which you become depends on YOU
- If you think you will do badly I expect you will
- If you expect to do well you probably will – or you will at least have a better frame of mind to negotiate whatever slings and arrows come your way.
Whether or not another recession/depression happens to the economy depends on the attitude of the people making up the economy. 2007-08 was I think my sixth (or thereabouts) since I’ve been in work and in general we talk ourselves into them. Mood can be contagious and once the dominoes start to fall they just keep right on going.
Eventually we all get fed up of being doom-mongers and everything picks up again.
Which reminds me. Have you noticed that a “correction” in the market/housing/etc., is always downwards? Never up.
Just saying…
I imagine some clever economist or spin-doctor can tell me why but I think this relates entirely to human nature. If all goes well in our lives it must be because we made it so but if the opposite happens it’s someone else’s fault. I have frequently seen this applied to executive remuneration negotiations, especially in 2006-07 just before the wheels came off. But who is likely to want to admit ups are as likely (and random) as downs?
Please let me know what you think. I am particularly interested in the opinions of people in their mid-to-late 30s and early 40s as I talk to plenty of people who are older and daughter and her friends give me plenty of information relating to younger.
If there are any topics you would like me to ponder upon, please let me know.
