Staring at a blank canvas

Early start as I mentioned above. On the road soon after 06.00. And it’s JUST starting to get light (again) at that time. Coo. The road I take goes across the area known as “The New Forest”. Very ancient area as those in the know about the use of words in English English (can’t vouch for the US sort). You can virtually guarantee that, if a town or village has a New Road or New Street that it’s the second oldest road in the neighbourhood. The oldest road can be any one of thousands of names but the second was always the new road… Nice networking meeting. Don’t think anything of value will demonstrably come out of this morning but it all counts towards the 8, 12 or even 15 “touches” before other people start to remember you and what you do. Didn’t have my coaching session but diverted 20 km out of my way to collect some paperwork – couldn’t see any other time I could sensibly do so in the timeframe (I hate this sodding spellchecker – it causes me to doubt my knowledge of my own language) I needed it.

So I get back here after 11.00.

In other words – 2/3rd of a standard day without doing anything vaguely (existing) client related. And the start of brain fluff. That feeling you get when the only thing keeping your ears apart is cotton wool… So the only thing to do is emails. Sigh – anything else will involve thinking and thinking wasn’t going to be my strong point at that part of the day. A nap would have been the sensible option but I might still be asleep now if I had – four hours later.

Question.

This assumes you’re a baby boomer rather than a millennial or generation Z. Do you send emails like you used to do letters? Gets the topic off your desk (screen) and onto someone else’s on the off chance they’ll procrastinate and you’ll get it back a week later. Time to breathe and time to think and you can get on with something important instead? Doesn’t it just aggravate the **** out of you when you get a response 20 minutes later? Or when you don’t hear a thing and the bl00dy thing WAS urgent? A request to all those youngsters out there – PLEASE play by the (my) rules… And all of a sudden there’s well over 500 words and it must be time for tea. Then back to the feckin’ emails.
