Countdown to a break

Tick tock, tick tock…

Would you believe “tock” is NOT in the spellchecker…

Well, it is now.

I wish one could just go when the holiday/break gets near. Instead of which the hours countdown in an ever decreasing rush (or should that be increasing) while the number of tasks to perform (i) stays the same or (ii) increases as the time to do the tasks reduces. Tell me it’s not just me…

We are off to visit Die tochter in Berlin for a few days coming back during the Easter weekend. Just by moving the dates a couple of days virtually halved the flight costs. No brainer really. This will be the first place we’ve visited twice in a short period of time (say, less than five years) for absolutely ages!

It’s a wanderlust thing really – there are sooo many places and an increasingly short time to visit them all. If I’m honest, had the 2007-08 recession not happened, I might have been able to take (early) retirement and spent the next decade or two travelling as much of the world as we can. But it did so I can’t so the advent of cloud based systems mean I am increasingly able to work anywhere in the world which could, with any luck and a bit of work, mean just about the same thing!

There won’t be a post next week as I don’t expect to have the time – if I’m lucky.

As we get closer to the break the adrenaline starts to kick in along with the sense of anticipation. Trouble is the effect on my aches and pains. The mix kicks my rheumatism and neuralgia to new heights to which I have to add waiting for a surgical procedure.

I have had a love-hate (or possibly more properly a disquiet-hate) relationship with matters medical or dental for years and years and years. Childhood rheumatics and ineffectual medication and a very unsympathetic dentist at a young age are probably major contributors I think.

So the fight, flight or freeze effect kicks in and all my joints tingle – and not in a pleasant way. Over the years I had learned to ignore the discomfort but, as I get that little bit older< it’s getting more and more difficult to do so.

However, back to the surgical procedure – and before you ask it’s NOT a sense of humour transplant or the insertion of a new brain cell! – well, there is the offset between the benefits of private medical insurance (“I usually do these operations on alternate Tuesdays – how is your diary fixed over the next few weeks?”) and the looming procedure itself (date still not fixed – assume it’s awaiting confirmation from the insurers that they are authorising the claim).

Edginess on edginess on edginess. Don’t waste your time telling me it’s irrational. I’ve known that for ever – just doesn’t stop it happening. Not sufficiently debilitating to resort to hypnotherapy but not mild enough to just ignore…

I shall be out of action for maybe a week (although I’m sure I will be able to answer emails and texts) and no heavy work for about six weeks, which may mean I’ll be able to abdicate from the hoovering and mowing until Summer. Oh happy days…

Ah well. Back to the emails.
